RTL stands for Right-to-left, a computer abbreviation.
Text direction used by scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu, which software must support by mirroring layouts, aligning text to the right and handling mixed-direction content. Developers test RTL layouts separately from left-to-right (LTR) ones.
Example: The checkout page breaks in RTL mode: the back arrow points the wrong way in Arabic.
Usage notes
The Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm decides how mixed text, such as an English brand name inside a Hebrew sentence, is displayed. Web pages set direction with the dir attribute, and CSS logical properties make mirroring easier. Numbers inside Arabic and Hebrew text still run left to right. In chip design, RTL means register-transfer level, an unrelated term.
