1. Pediatric nurse practitioner
Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations
Nurse practitioner specializing in care of children from birth through young adulthood, in either primary care (CPNP-PC) or acute care (CPNP-AC). Certification is offered mainly by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board.
Example: PNP sees well-child visits and asthma follow-ups at the pediatric clinic.
Primary care PNPs work in pediatric offices and schools, while acute care PNPs work in hospitals, emergency departments and pediatric ICUs. ANCC formerly offered a pediatric primary care exam. The credential letters CPNP stand for certified pediatric nurse practitioner.
2. Plug and Play (PnP)
Technology & Computing · Computer Abbreviations
Ability of an operating system to detect newly connected hardware, assign resources and load drivers automatically, with no manual jumpers or configuration. USB devices are the everyday example.
Example: Windows recognized the scanner as a PnP device and installed the driver automatically.
Microsoft promoted Plug and Play with Windows 95, at a time when installing an expansion card often meant setting IRQ and DMA jumpers by hand; early failures earned it the nickname "plug and pray". UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is a separate networking standard with a similar goal. Windows still refers to its device-detection subsystem as Plug and Play.
