ReFS stands for Resilient File System, a computer abbreviation.

Microsoft file system designed for data integrity and very large volumes, using checksums and automatic repair with Storage Spaces mirrors. It is used mainly on Windows servers and for Windows 11 Dev Drives.

Example: Create a Dev Drive formatted with ReFS to speed up builds in Visual Studio.

Usage notes

ReFS debuted with Windows Server 2012. It lacks some NTFS features, such as file-level compression in early versions, and Windows cannot boot from it. Backup products such as Veeam use its block cloning to make synthetic backups quickly. Dev Drive, introduced in Windows 11 in 2023, uses ReFS for developer workloads.
