1. Run-pass option
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Offensive play that packages a run and a pass in one call: after the snap the quarterback reads a defender and either hands off or throws a quick pass. RPOs stress linebackers who must choose between run support and coverage.
Example: The Eagles ran RPOs on almost half of their first-down snaps.
Spread offenses popularized RPOs in college football before NFL quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson made them common. Because NFL offensive linemen may not be more than one yard downfield when a pass is thrown, the decision must come quickly.
2. Recovery point objective
Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations
The maximum acceptable amount of data loss after an incident, measured as time; an RPO of 15 minutes means backups or replication must capture data at least every 15 minutes.
Example: Nightly backups give a 24-hour RPO, which finance says is far too long for the ledger.
RPO and RTO together define disaster recovery requirements. Synchronous replication can achieve an RPO near zero but adds latency, while asynchronous replication risks losing the latest writes. Ransomware planning adds the need for immutable backups that attackers cannot delete.
3. Recruitment process outsourcing
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Arrangement in which an employer transfers all or part of its recruiting to an outside provider that acts as an extension of its in-house team, using the employer's brand, systems and processes. Pricing is typically a management fee plus a fee per hire.
Example: We brought in an RPO partner to handle 300 seasonal hires at the distribution centers.
Unlike staffing agencies, which supply temporary workers or charge a percentage of salary per placement, RPO providers manage the process itself. Engagements can cover a single project, a business unit or all hiring.
