PaaS stands for Platform as a service, a cloud computing abbreviation.
A cloud model that provides a managed environment for building, running and scaling applications, handling servers, operating systems, runtimes and databases so developers just deploy code. Heroku, Google App Engine, Azure App Service and Render are examples.
Example: Push the repo to the PaaS and it builds, deploys and scales the app without anyone touching a server.
Usage notes
Heroku (2007) and Google App Engine (2008) were early examples, and Salesforce bought Heroku in 2010. PaaS sits between IaaS, where customers manage virtual machines, and SaaS, where they use finished software. The convenience comes with less control and the risk of lock-in to a platform's conventions. Pronounced "pass".
