CategoriesTechnology & Computing

RHEL stands for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a cloud computing abbreviation.

A commercial Linux distribution from Red Hat, sold by subscription with long-term support, certified hardware and software, and security updates, and widely used on enterprise servers and in regulated industries.

Example: The vendor only certifies its software on RHEL 9, so the new servers must run it.

Usage notes

IBM bought Red Hat for about $34 billion in 2019. After CentOS was refocused as CentOS Stream, rebuilds such as Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux emerged, and Red Hat's 2023 decision to restrict access to RHEL source code drew criticism from those projects. Pronounced "rel".
