The convention is especially common in algebra and geometry texts influenced by French mathematical style. General style guides discourage it in favor of separate sentences. It is always written with a period.

Canadian education savings account in which growth is tax-sheltered and the federal government adds a Canada Education Savings Grant of 20% on the first $2,500 contributed per child each year, to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child.
Example: We put $2,500 a year into the RESP to collect the full $500 grant.
When the student withdraws money for post-secondary education, grants and growth are taxed in the student's hands, usually at little or no tax. Lower-income families may also receive the Canada Learning Bond without contributing anything themselves.
