RREF stands for Reduced row echelon form, a math abbreviation.

The simplified matrix produced by Gauss-Jordan elimination: each leading entry is 1, it is the only nonzero entry in its column, and leading entries move right going down the rows. Solutions of linear systems can be read directly from it.

Example: Row-reduce the augmented matrix to RREF to find x = 2, y = −1 and z = 3.

Usage notes

Unlike row echelon form (REF), the RREF of a matrix is unique. Graphing calculators and software such as MATLAB and SymPy provide an rref() function. The number of leading 1s equals the rank of the matrix.
