CategoriesGovernment & Politics

PSLF stands for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, a public program abbreviation also used in business and education.

Program that forgives remaining federal Direct Loan balances, tax-free, after 120 qualifying monthly payments made while working full time for a government agency or qualifying nonprofit. Borrowers must use an eligible repayment plan.

Example: She received an email that her PSLF forgiveness was approved after ten years as a public school teacher.

Usage notes

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 established it, and it produced its first forgiveness in 2017, when most early applications were denied over technicalities. Temporary waivers in 2021 and 2022 and later fixes allowed many more borrowers to qualify. A 2025 rule lets the Education Department exclude employers it finds have a "substantial illegal purpose", starting in 2026.
