RAL stands for Raltegravir, a drug abbreviation.
First integrase inhibitor for HIV, approved in 2007, still used for its few drug interactions, in pregnancy and in some post-exposure prophylaxis regimens. Brand name Isentress.
Example: nPEP: RAL 400 mg BID plus TDF/FTC daily x 28 days.
Usage notes
Standard raltegravir is taken twice daily, while a high-dose 1,200 mg formulation allows once-daily use. Its resistance barrier is lower than that of dolutegravir and bictegravir. Because it is not boosted and not a major CYP substrate, it suits patients taking many other medications.
