PVP-I stands for Povidone-iodine, a drug abbreviation.

Iodine complexed with polyvinylpyrrolidone, sold as Betadine, used for surgical skin preparation, wound cleansing and, in a 5% ophthalmic solution, to prepare the eye before injections and surgery.

Example: Prep site with PVP-I and allow to dry for 2 minutes before incision.

Usage notes

Povidone-iodine must dry to work fully and is inactivated by blood and organic matter. Unlike chlorhexidine, it is safe on mucous membranes, which is why it is used in the eye and vagina. Iodine absorption from large areas can affect thyroid function, particularly in newborns.
