CYP stands for Cytochrome P450, a pharmacology abbreviation.
Family of liver and intestinal enzymes that metabolize most drugs. Individual enzymes are named with numbers and letters, such as CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9 and CYP2C19, and their inhibition or induction causes many drug interactions.
Example: Fluconazole inhibits CYP2C9, so the patient's warfarin dose was cut by a third.
Usage notes
CYP3A4 alone handles a large share of commonly prescribed drugs. Grapefruit juice inhibits intestinal CYP3A4, raising levels of drugs such as simvastatin and some calcium channel blockers. Genetic variants make some people "poor" or "ultrarapid" metabolizers, which is why codeine can be dangerous in ultrarapid CYP2D6 metabolizers.
