CategoriesMedical

PPROM stands for Preterm prelabor rupture of membranes, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Rupture of the amniotic sac before 37 weeks and before labor, a cause of about a third of preterm births. Management depends on gestational age and includes antibiotics to prolong pregnancy, corticosteroids and close monitoring for infection.

Example: PPROM at 29 weeks; latency antibiotics, betamethasone, admit to antepartum unit.

Usage notes

Latency antibiotics typically combine ampicillin with a macrolide such as azithromycin. Delivery is usually recommended by 34 weeks or earlier if infection or fetal distress develops, although some studies support waiting longer in selected cases. Very early PPROM before viability carries a high risk of lung underdevelopment.
