1. Pilot in command

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Pilot with final authority over and responsibility for the operation and safety of a flight, designated before it begins. On an airliner the captain is the PIC; in general aviation, PIC time is logged by the sole manipulator of the controls when properly rated.

Example: As PIC, the captain decided to divert to Shannon rather than continue with a seriously ill passenger.

Under 14 CFR 91.3 the pilot in command "is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft" and may deviate from any rule to meet an emergency. PIC hours are a key hiring and insurance metric. Logging rules for PIC time differ between the FAA, EASA and Transport Canada.

2. Pharmacist-in-charge

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Pharmacist designated to a state board of pharmacy as legally responsible for a pharmacy's operations and compliance, including controlled-substance records, staffing, policies and inspections.

Example: The PIC must sign the biennial controlled substance inventory and notify the board of the change.

Most states require every licensed pharmacy to have one PIC and limit how many pharmacies one pharmacist may oversee. When the PIC leaves, the pharmacy must report a replacement promptly. Board inspections and disciplinary actions often focus on the PIC's oversight.
