1. Passengers
Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations
Industry shorthand for passengers, used by airlines, airports, cruise lines, ferry operators and tour companies in load reports, manifests and planning. Ground staff speak of "pax" counts at boarding, and airports report annual pax totals.
Example: Final numbers: 172 PAX plus two lap infants, ready to close the door.
The origin is uncertain; the x is often explained as a generic abbreviation marker, as in "tx" or "wx." Also written pax in lowercase, and used for the singular too, as in "one pax missing." Unrelated to Latin "pax" (peace), as in Pax Romana.
2. Penny Arcade Expo
Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations
Series of gaming conventions for players rather than industry insiders, featuring game demos, panels, tabletop rooms and concerts. Editions include PAX West in Seattle and PAX East in Boston.
Example: We waited two hours in line at PAX to play the demo.
Founded in 2004 by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, creators of the Penny Arcade webcomic. The first show drew about 3,300 people in Bellevue, Washington. Organizers now just call the events PAX.
