PEC stands for Primary engineering control, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Device that provides the ISO Class 5 air quality needed for sterile compounding, including laminar airflow workbenches, biological safety cabinets and compounding isolators. In nonsterile hazardous compounding, a containment hood serves the same role.
Example: Certification due: each PEC in the cleanroom must be recertified every 6 months.
Usage notes
PECs are distinguished from secondary engineering controls (SECs), the surrounding cleanroom suite with its anteroom and buffer room. USP requires smoke-pattern testing and particle counts during certification. Choosing the correct PEC depends on whether the drug is hazardous and on its USP 797 category.
