PIREP stands for Pilot report, an aviation abbreviation.
Report of actual in-flight weather passed by a pilot to ATC or flight service, describing turbulence, icing, cloud tops, wind shear or other conditions. PIREPs are coded and distributed so other crews and forecasters can see real conditions that ground sensors miss.
Example: Approach relayed a PIREP of moderate chop between 8,000 and 10,000 feet from a regional jet ahead of us.
Usage notes
An urgent PIREP is coded UUA and a routine one UA. Turbulence is graded light, moderate, severe or extreme, and the aircraft type is always included because light chop in an airliner can be violent in a small plane. The FAA encourages pilots to file reports of good conditions too, since "smooth ride" information is equally useful.
