1. Paid family leave
Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations
Leave from work with partial wage replacement to bond with a new child or care for a seriously ill family member, provided in the US through state insurance programs funded by payroll contributions or through employer policies. Some programs also cover military family needs.
Example: California's PFL replaced about 60% of my wages for eight weeks of bonding leave.
California launched the first state program in 2004, and more than a dozen states plus the District of Columbia have since enacted their own, often combined with medical leave as paid family and medical leave (PFML). There is no national paid leave program for private-sector workers, although federal employees have received 12 weeks of paid parental leave since 2020.
2. Professional Fighters League
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
Mixed martial arts promotion that uses a season format: fighters earn points in regular-season bouts and advance to playoffs, with a large cash prize for each weight-class champion. It acquired the rival promotion Bellator MMA in 2023.
Example: Francis Ngannou made his MMA return in the PFL after leaving the UFC.
Rebranded from World Series of Fighting in 2018. The league format, with standings and playoffs, borrows from team sports, while separate "Super Fights" cards showcase stars outside the season. Ngannou signed with the PFL in 2023 after his UFC contract expired.
