Founded in 1975, with the first game played on April 9 of that year. Some conferences allow each team one foreign "import," often a former NBA or US college player. It is frequently described as the second-oldest continuously operating professional basketball league in the world after the NBA.

Founded in 1958 by Akron, Ohio, sports agent Eddie Elias. The PBA became a television fixture through ABC's Pro Bowlers Tour, broadcast on Saturday afternoons from 1962 to 1997. Its Hall of Fame and many title records date to that broadcast era.
