Usage notes
Launched in 2013 with eight teams after two earlier US women's leagues, WUSA (2001-2003) and WPS (2009-2011), folded. It grew to 14 teams in 2024, with Boston and Denver added for 2026. A 2024 collective bargaining agreement made it the first major US professional league to abolish the draft, and it also guaranteed player contracts.
