OPS stands for On-base plus slugging, a baseball abbreviation.
Sum of on-base percentage and slugging percentage, a simple all-in-one measure of a hitter's production. An OPS above .900 is excellent and above 1.000 is MVP-caliber.
Example: Judge led the majors with a 1.159 OPS in 2024.
Usage notes
Popularized in the 1980s by writers including John Thorn and Pete Palmer in The Hidden Game of Baseball. OPS slightly overweights slugging relative to on-base percentage, which is one reason analysts built wOBA. Babe Ruth's career OPS of about 1.164 is the highest ever.
