CategoriesSports

wOBA stands for Weighted on-base average, a baseball abbreviation.

Sabermetric stat that weights each way of reaching base by its actual run value: a walk is worth less than a single, a single less than a double, and so on. It is scaled to resemble on-base percentage, so .320 is about average.

Example: Statcast pegged his expected wOBA at .410, well above his actual figure.

Usage notes

Introduced by Tom Tango, Mitchel Lichtman and Andrew Dolphin in The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball (2006). The weights change slightly each season with the league's run environment. Written with a lowercase w, pronounced "woe-bah".
