1. National League

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Older of MLB's two leagues, with 15 teams in East, Central and West divisions. Its champion, decided in the NLCS, represents it in the World Series.

Example: The NL wild-card race left four teams fighting for two spots in September.

Founded in 1876, the National League is the oldest existing major league in North American sports. It adopted the designated hitter permanently in 2022, ending decades of pitchers batting. The Milwaukee Brewers moved from the AL to the NL in 1998. In geography NL is the code for the Netherlands and Newfoundland and Labrador.

2. Netherlands

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

The Netherlands, alpha-3 NLD, has Amsterdam as its constitutional capital and The Hague as the seat of government. Its .nl domain is one of the largest country domains in the world.

Example: Dutch IBANs begin with NL and contain 18 characters.

Holland strictly means only two of the twelve provinces, and the government has stopped using it as a nickname. Sports bodies use NED. In Canada NL means Newfoundland and Labrador.

3. Newfoundland and Labrador

Geography & Places · Canadian Province and Territory Abbreviations

Easternmost province, made up of the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador, which joined Canada on March 31, 1949, the last province to do so. St. John's is the capital, and the island keeps its own time zone, 30 minutes ahead of Atlantic Time.

Example: The cod moratorium hit fishing towns across NL hard in the 1990s.

NL replaced the older NF after the province's official name changed to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001. The traditional abbreviation was Nfld., and Canadian Press now uses N.L. Postal codes begin with A. NL is also the ISO country code for the Netherlands.

4. No liability

Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations

Australian company type restricted to mining activities, in which shareholders are not obliged to pay calls on partly paid shares; if they do not pay, their shares are forfeited instead. The suffix "NL" must appear at the end of the company name.

Example: The gold explorer was originally listed on the ASX as a no-liability company with the suffix NL.

The form originated in the Victorian goldfields in the 1870s to help risky mining ventures raise capital from many small investors. Under the Corporations Act 2001, a no-liability company must restrict its activities to mining purposes. Few NL companies remain, since most explorers now register as ordinary public companies.
