Began in 1969 and expanded from best-of-five to best-of-seven in 1985. The pennant winner receives the Warren C. Giles Trophy, named for a former NL president. Before 1969 the team with the best regular-season record simply won the pennant, apart from occasional tiebreaker playoffs.
