Usage notes

The Inspector General Act of 1978 created the modern system after Watergate. Inspectors general at major agencies are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and Congress must receive 30 days' notice before one is removed. The dismissal of about 17 inspectors general in January 2025 prompted debate over that requirement.
