OPM stands for U.S. Office of Personnel Management, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Human resources agency of the federal government that sets civil service policy, administers retirement benefits and the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, and runs USAJOBS. It also decides when federal offices in the Washington area close for bad weather.
Example: OPM announced a two-hour delayed arrival for federal workers because of the snowstorm.
Usage notes
Created in 1979 under the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, which split the old Civil Service Commission into OPM and the Merit Systems Protection Board. A 2015 breach exposed background-investigation records of more than 20 million people. In January 2025 OPM sent the "Fork in the Road" deferred-resignation offer to federal employees.
