OHI stands for Other health impairment, a K-12 education abbreviation.

IDEA disability category covering chronic or acute health conditions, such as ADHD, epilepsy, diabetes, heart conditions or Tourette syndrome, that limit strength, vitality or alertness and affect educational performance. Many students with ADHD receive IEPs under OHI.

Example: Her ADHD qualified her for special education under OHI rather than a learning disability.

Usage notes

The category was expanded in the 1990s to clarify that ADHD can qualify. Students with these conditions who do not need specially designed instruction usually receive a 504 plan instead. Medical documentation is often part of the evaluation.
