1. Multi-tiered system of supports
Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations
Schoolwide framework that organizes academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports into tiers, with universal instruction for all students and targeted and intensive interventions for those who need them. It integrates RTI and PBIS under a single data-driven system.
Example: The MTSS team meets every three weeks to review screening data and assign interventions.
The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 refers to multi-tiered systems of supports. Effective MTSS relies on universal screening, evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring. Some states have adopted their own branded versions of the framework.
2. Medial tibial stress syndrome
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Exercise-related pain along the inner border of the lower shin, commonly called shin splints, seen in runners, dancers and military recruits. It results from repetitive stress on the tibia and surrounding tissues and usually improves with reduced training load.
Example: Diffuse posteromedial shin tenderness over 8 cm, hop test tolerable: MTSS rather than stress fracture.
Pain spread over a long segment of bone favors MTSS, while sharply localized tenderness raises concern for a tibial stress fracture, which can be confirmed with MRI. Rapid increases in running volume, flat feet and low bone density are risk factors. Graded return to running is the core of treatment.
