IDEA stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a K-12 education abbreviation also used in government.
Federal special education law that, in school practice, determines eligibility evaluations, IEPs, related services such as speech and occupational therapy, discipline protections and parents' procedural rights. Part B covers ages 3 to 21, and Part C covers infants and toddlers.
Example: Under IDEA, the school must evaluate a child within 60 days of receiving parental consent.
Usage notes
Originally passed in 1975 as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, it was renamed IDEA in 1990 and last reauthorized in 2004. Federal law sets the 60-day evaluation timeline unless a state sets its own. About 7.5 million students receive services under the law. Congress has never funded the 40 percent share of costs it authorized.
