OGTT stands for Oral glucose tolerance test, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Test in which a fasting patient drinks a standard glucose load, usually 75 g, and blood glucose is measured two hours later. A 2-hour value of 200 mg/dL or more diagnoses diabetes, and 140–199 mg/dL indicates impaired glucose tolerance.
Example: 2-hour OGTT 214 mg/dL despite normal A1C; diabetes confirmed.
Usage notes
The OGTT detects some diabetes missed by fasting glucose or A1C, especially in people of Asian descent and after gastric surgery. Pregnancy versions use a 50 g challenge, a 100 g 3-hour test or a 75 g 2-hour test. Patients should eat a normal carbohydrate diet for three days beforehand. Also called GTT.
