1. A1C test (hemoglobin A1c)
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Plain-language name of the hemoglobin A1c blood test, used by the American Diabetes Association, the CDC and most patient materials. People with diabetes usually have it checked about twice a year when stable and every three months when treatment changes or goals are not met.
Example: My doctor said my A1C is 6.1, so I'm in the prediabetes range.
Also written A1c, HbA1c, HgbA1c or glycohemoglobin; all refer to the same measurement. An A1C can be translated into estimated average glucose (eAG) with the formula 28.7 x A1C minus 46.7, giving mg/dL, so an A1C of 7 percent corresponds to about 154 mg/dL. Fasting is not required, and point-of-care devices give results during a clinic visit.
2. Airman First Class
Military · US Air Force and Space Force Rank Abbreviations
Air Force enlisted rank at pay grade E-3, shown by two chevrons around a central star. Airmen first class are usually working in their career field for the first time, under supervision, while completing upgrade training.
Example: A1C Brooks finished her five-level upgrade training ahead of schedule.
A1Cs become senior airmen after 36 months in service and 20 months in grade, or 28 months in grade, whichever comes first. Top performers can be promoted six months early through the "below-the-zone" program. The Space Force equivalent is Specialist 3, and the Army equivalent is Private First Class.
