MEN stands for Multiple endocrine neoplasia, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Inherited syndromes causing tumors in several endocrine glands. MEN1 involves parathyroid, pituitary and pancreatic tumors; MEN2A involves medullary thyroid cancer, pheochromocytoma and parathyroid disease; MEN2B adds mucosal neuromas and a marfanoid build.
Example: Family RET mutation, MEN2A; prophylactic thyroidectomy planned for 6-year-old carrier.
Usage notes
MEN1 is caused by mutations in the MEN1 gene (encoding menin); MEN2 by activating RET mutations. Students remember MEN1 as the "three Ps": parathyroid, pituitary and pancreas. Children carrying high-risk RET mutations undergo thyroid removal early in life to prevent cancer. Some newer classifications rename MEN2B as MEN3.
