MNG stands for Multinodular goiter, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Enlarged thyroid containing multiple nodules, common in older adults and in iodine-deficient regions. It may produce normal hormone levels, compress the trachea or esophagus, or become overactive (toxic MNG).
Example: Toxic MNG with subclinical hyperthyroidism; RAI preferred over surgery given comorbidities.
Usage notes
Toxic multinodular goiter is also called Plummer's disease. Iodine loads, such as CT contrast, can tip a nodular gland into overt hyperthyroidism (the Jod-Basedow effect). Large goiters extending behind the breastbone (substernal) may need surgery for breathing or swallowing problems.
