PHPT stands for Primary hyperparathyroidism, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.
Overproduction of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid glands themselves, usually from a single benign adenoma, causing high blood calcium. It is the most common cause of high calcium in outpatients and is often found on routine blood tests in women after menopause.
Example: PHPT with calcium 11.4, osteoporosis T-score -2.8; sestamibi localizes left inferior adenoma.
Usage notes
Classic symptoms are summarized as "stones, bones, abdominal groans and psychic moans". Parathyroidectomy cures most patients and is recommended for those with kidney stones, osteoporosis, significant hypercalcemia or age under 50. Secondary hyperparathyroidism, from CKD or vitamin D deficiency, is a different condition.
