NWU stands for Navy Working Uniform, a military term abbreviation.
Navy utility uniform, now worn mainly in the woodland-pattern Type III version ashore and on deployments. The earlier blue-and-gray Type I version, nicknamed "blueberries," was phased out by 2019.
Example: Sailors in NWU Type III lined up for the change-of-command ceremony at the pier.
Usage notes
The Type I uniform was criticized because its blue pattern offered no camouflage and its fabric was flammable, making it unsuitable aboard ships. Sailors afloat now wear flame-resistant coveralls. A desert Type II variant is reserved for special warfare personnel.
