NFZ stands for No-fly zone, a military term abbreviation.
Area over which aircraft are forbidden to fly, enforced by military aircraft and air defenses, often declared to protect civilians or restrict an adversary's air force.
Example: NATO jets enforced the NFZ over Libya in 2011.
Usage notes
US and allied aircraft enforced no-fly zones over northern and southern Iraq from 1991 to 2003. The UN Security Council authorized the Libyan no-fly zone in Resolution 1973. Calls for no-fly zones are controversial because enforcement can mean shooting down aircraft.
