NJP stands for Nonjudicial punishment, a military term abbreviation.
Disciplinary procedure under Article 15 of the UCMJ that lets a commander punish minor misconduct without a court-martial. Punishments can include reduction in rank, forfeiture of pay, extra duty and restriction.
Example: He received NJP for showing up late to formation three times in one month.
Usage notes
The Army and Air Force call it an "Article 15," the Navy "captain's mast" or simply "mast," and the Marine Corps "office hours." Except when attached to or embarked on a vessel, a member may refuse NJP and demand trial by court-martial instead. NJP is not a criminal conviction.
