Admitted on October 31, 1864, during the Civil War, hence the motto Battle Born. Nevada is the driest state; Carson City is the capital, Las Vegas the largest city, and most of the state's land is managed by the federal government.

In AP copy and older references Nevada is Nev. NV was assigned in 1963; NE (Nebraska) and NA are wrong guesses. Nevada Day, a state holiday on the last Friday of October, marks admission. The name comes from the Sierra Nevada, Spanish for snowy mountain range.
