NOF stands for Neck of femur (fracture), a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
British term for a hip fracture through the femoral neck, usually after a fall in an older person with osteoporosis. Patients typically cannot bear weight and have a shortened, externally rotated leg; most need surgery with screws, hemiarthroplasty or total hip replacement.
Example: Fractured NOF after fall at home, displaced intracapsular; hemiarthroplasty on tomorrow's trauma list.
Usage notes
Commonly written "fractured NOF" or "#NOF" in UK notes, where # is shorthand for fracture. NHS standards aim for surgery within 36 hours, and the National Hip Fracture Database audits care. In radiology NOF can also mean nonossifying fibroma, a benign bone lesion in children. Hip fractures carry substantial one-year mortality.
