1. Lumbar spinal stenosis

Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations

Narrowing of the lower spinal canal, usually from age-related disc bulging, facet joint enlargement and ligament thickening, which compresses nerve roots. It causes neurogenic claudication: leg pain, numbness or weakness when standing or walking that eases with sitting or bending forward.

Example: LSS L3–L5 with neurogenic claudication at 2 blocks; leans on shopping cart for relief.

Relief when leaning forward on a shopping cart is a classic clue, because flexion widens the canal. Vascular claudication from artery disease is the main look-alike and eases with standing still. Decompressive laminectomy helps patients who fail conservative care. Pronounced as letters.

2. Lean Six Sigma

Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations

Process improvement methodology, and the family of belt certifications based on it, that combines Lean's focus on eliminating waste with Six Sigma's focus on reducing variation. Certifications such as LSS Green Belt are offered by universities, ASQ-affiliated trainers and private providers.

Example: The county's LSS Green Belt course trains staff to streamline permit processing.

Because no single body controls Lean Six Sigma certification, quality and rigor vary widely among providers. Lean grew out of the Toyota Production System. Employers often ask candidates which body issued their belt and whether they completed a real project.
