1. National Cancer Institute

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations · also used in government

Principal US federal agency for cancer research and training, part of the National Institutes of Health. It funds research at universities and cancer centers, runs clinical trial networks and designates NCI Cancer Centers that meet standards for research excellence.

Example: Treated at an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in a phase 3 trial.

Created by the National Cancer Act of 1937, it was the first institute of what became the NIH. The National Cancer Act of 1971, signed by President Richard Nixon, greatly expanded its budget and authority. NCI maintains the PDQ cancer information summaries, the SEER statistics program and the CTCAE adverse event criteria. Its main campus is in Bethesda, Maryland.

2. Non-controlling interest

Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations

Portion of a subsidiary's equity not owned by the parent company, reported within equity on the consolidated balance sheet. When a parent owns 80 percent of a subsidiary, the other 20 percent belongs to the NCI.

Example: Net income attributable to NCI was $35 million, reflecting the partner's 30 percent stake in the Chilean mine.

Formerly called minority interest, a term still common in valuation, where enterprise value adds NCI because consolidated EBITDA includes 100 percent of the subsidiary. US GAAP (ASC 810) and IFRS 10 require NCI to be presented within equity, separately from the parent's equity.
