MCAS stands for Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System, a standardized test abbreviation.
Massachusetts statewide testing program, given since 1998, in English language arts, mathematics and science for grades 3 through 10. In November 2024 voters approved Question 2, ending the requirement that students pass the 10th-grade MCAS to earn a high school diploma.
Example: Under the old rules, she needed a passing MCAS score in math to graduate.
Usage notes
The tests were created under the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993. MCAS results still count for school and district accountability. High scores have also determined eligibility for the state's Adams Scholarship, which waives tuition at public colleges.
