PDB stands for Protein Data Bank, a biology abbreviation.
Global archive of experimentally determined three-dimensional structures of proteins, DNA and other biological molecules, freely available online. Each entry has a four-character PDB ID, and the archive holds more than 200,000 structures from X-ray crystallography, NMR and cryo-electron microscopy.
Example: The crystal structure of the complex has been deposited under PDB ID 6VSB.
Usage notes
Founded in 1971 at Brookhaven National Laboratory with seven structures, the PDB is now run by the Worldwide Protein Data Bank partnership. Its data trained AlphaFold, the AI system whose developers shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Structures are stored in PDB and mmCIF file formats.
