1. Metacarpophalangeal (joint)

Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations

Knuckle joints where the hand bones (metacarpals) meet the finger bones (proximal phalanges). Symmetric swelling of the MCP joints is a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis, while osteoarthritis tends to spare them.

Example: Bilateral MCP and wrist synovitis with morning stiffness lasting over an hour.

The boxer's fracture involves the fifth metacarpal neck near the MCP joint. Hemochromatosis classically causes arthritis of the second and third MCP joints with hook-like osteophytes. "Fight bites" over the MCP joint from punching someone in the mouth need careful evaluation because they can seed the joint with bacteria.

2. Model Context Protocol

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

An open standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data sources, such as file systems, databases, calendars and business apps, through a common client-server interface. A service exposes an MCP server once, and any compatible AI application can use it.

Example: Install the GitHub MCP server so the assistant can read issues and open pull requests.

Introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 and adopted during 2025 by other AI providers and developer tools. It is often compared to a USB-C port for AI applications. Servers expose tools, resources and prompts, and security guidance warns about prompt injection through untrusted tool output. In medicine MCP can mean the metacarpophalangeal joint.

3. Master of City Planning

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Planning degree title used by MIT, the University of Pennsylvania and UC Berkeley for their accredited urban planning programs. It is equivalent to the MUP and MURP offered elsewhere.

Example: Before joining the housing authority, she earned an MCP from MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

MIT's degree is formally the Master in City Planning. MCP has unrelated meanings in technology, such as Microsoft Certified Professional and the Model Context Protocol for AI tools, so résumés often add the school name. Planning graduates may pursue AICP certification after gaining experience.
