Bond backed by a pool of home or commercial mortgages, whose investors receive the principal and interest borrowers pay. Most US residential MBS are guaranteed by Ginnie Mae, Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, making agency MBS one of the largest segments of the US bond market.
Example: The Fed's holdings of agency MBS peaked at about $2.7 trillion in 2022.
MBS investors face prepayment risk: when rates fall, homeowners refinance and investors get their money back early. Private-label MBS backed by subprime loans were at the center of the 2008 financial crisis. Residential MBS are often called RMBS and commercial ones CMBS.
2. Modified barium swallow

Fluoroscopic swallowing study in which a speech-language pathologist and radiology staff watch a patient swallow liquids and foods of different textures mixed with barium. It identifies aspiration and guides diet recommendations and swallowing therapy after stroke, head and neck cancer or neurologic disease.
Example: MBS: silent aspiration with thin liquids; mildly thick liquids and chin tuck recommended.
Also called a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS). Unlike a standard barium esophagram, it focuses on the mouth and throat phases of swallowing. Reports increasingly use IDDSI terminology for food textures and liquid thickness. Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is the bedside alternative.
