1. Myeloproliferative neoplasm
Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations
Group of chronic blood cancers in which the bone marrow overproduces one or more types of blood cells, including polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, primary myelofibrosis and chronic myeloid leukemia. They raise the risk of blood clots and can transform into myelofibrosis or acute leukemia.
Example: MPN workup for platelets 820,000: JAK2, CALR and MPL mutation testing sent.
Most Philadelphia-negative MPNs carry a driver mutation in JAK2, CALR or MPL. William Dameshek grouped these disorders together in 1951. Patients often describe itching after bathing, fatigue, night sweats and fullness from an enlarged spleen. Aspirin and control of cardiovascular risk factors lower clot risk.
2. Master Promissory Note
Education & Academia · Academic Abbreviations
Legal agreement in which a student or parent promises to repay federal student loans and agrees to their terms. A single MPN can cover multiple loans for up to ten years.
Example: First-year students must sign the MPN before the loan can be disbursed.
Borrowers sign it electronically at StudentAid.gov. Separate MPNs exist for Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and for PLUS loans. New borrowers must also complete entrance counseling.
