MOOC stands for Massive open online course, an academic abbreviation.
Online course open to large numbers of learners, often free to audit, offered through platforms such as Coursera, edX and FutureLearn by universities and companies. Paid options add graded assignments and certificates, and some MOOCs stack into degrees.
Example: More than 100,000 people enrolled in the machine learning MOOC in its first month.
Usage notes
Dave Cormier coined the term in 2008 for an open course on connectivism, and the New York Times called 2012 "the Year of the MOOC". Completion rates are typically low, often in the single digits among free learners. Pronounced "mook".
