MPL stands for Mozilla Public License, a software abbreviation.
Open-source license with "weak", file-level copyleft: modified files must stay open, but they may be combined with proprietary code in a larger work. Firefox and Thunderbird are released under it.
Example: Since only the MPL files we modified must be published, our proprietary plug-ins stay closed.
Usage notes
Mozilla released version 1.0 in 1998 when it opened Netscape's browser code; MPL 2.0 (2012) is compatible with the GPL. HashiCorp used MPL 2.0 for Terraform until it switched to the source-available Business Source License in 2023, prompting the community fork OpenTofu. The license sits between permissive licenses such as MIT and strong copyleft such as the GPL.
