NBV stands for Net book value, an accounting abbreviation.
Carrying amount of an asset on the balance sheet, equal to its original cost minus accumulated depreciation, amortization and impairment. When an asset is sold, the gain or loss equals the sale price minus its NBV.
Example: The truck had an NBV of $12,000 and sold for $15,000, producing a $3,000 gain.
Usage notes
Also called carrying value or carrying amount. NBV reflects accounting history, not market value, so old assets may be worth far more or less than their book value. At company level, net book value can also refer to total shareholders' equity.
