MSO4 stands for Morphine sulfate, a drug abbreviation.
Abbreviation for morphine sulfate, the standard opioid analgesic. It is on The Joint Commission "Do Not Use" list because MSO4 and MgSO4 (magnesium sulfate) have been confused, causing serious overdoses of one drug or the other.
Example: The old standing order read "MSO4 2 mg IV q2h PRN" and was rewritten as morphine 2 mg IV.
Usage notes
The Joint Commission requires "morphine sulfate" to be written out. Paramedic and older nursing texts still use MSO4 and "MS", and the term survives in some brand names such as MS Contin, which is permitted because it is a product name. Morphine is on ISMP's high-alert list.
